For those travelling on family-friendly ships, dress codes also don’t apply to children aged 12 and under. Also would benefit from chocolate milk as a drink option for children who don't drink pop, squash, juice etc. Like everything else on your cruise, the onboard accommodation has a lot to offer. The Conservatory Mini-suite is particularly special, with the option of outdoor seating on a balcony, or equally fabulous sea views from a generous conservatory-style space. With so many bars and restaurants, food on Iona offers plenty of variety and you really could eat and drink somewhere different every day. The concept of lots of smaller restaurants instead of a few huge ones means the ship doesn't feel crowded.

Next tables show the ship's inaugural voyages by destination. All itineraries are roundtrips from homeport Southampton England. The vessel's naming ceremony was initially scheduled for July 4, 2020 (Southampton) and planned as part of the themed "Ionafest cruise" (itinerary July 4-11) starting with the pierside naming event. Prices for the special voyage started from GBP 1300 pp (double-occupancy Inside cabin rates). However, due to the Coronavirus crisis, this special voyage was cancelled. The boat's christening ceremony was on May 16th, held in Port Southampton.

The pier-side event was led by Jo Whiley (Joanne Whiley-Morton/1965-born DJ and TV presenter). It was broadcasted live and included a short performance by Gary Barlow (1971-born English singer, songwriter, actor, TV personality). Traditionally, to bring the ship good fortune, Dame Irene Hays smashed against the hull a large bottle of Alex James Blur (cask-strength apple and pear cider/distilled spirit).

Personally, I love a buffet when I want an informal setting and I’m short on time. However, my favourite of the ‘included’ or ‘free’ selection was The Quays. Three restaurants in a small piazza offering Asian cuisine at Fusion, fish and chips at The Hook or American dining at Boardwalk Diner. You'll also have the opportunity to dress formally on Black Tie evenings by donning a suit, tuxedo, ball gown, cocktail dress or smart jacket with a tie. Except for the buffet, no location on Black Tie Night allows tailored shorts. Evening Casual is, however, permitted on Black Tie nights in the Beach House, The Glass House and the buffet.

The 710 Club

Most cruise ships do have a few issues when they first launch. I was originally meant to cruise on Iona in January of 2021 and I was gutted when that didn’t happen. I knew that I had to get on board the ship to try her for myself, so I booked a very cheap week-long cruise to Northern Europe. Get ready to make a splash with our amazing choice of pools on board. On Iona, you will find an incredible 18 whirlpool spas and 4 pools, including 1 infinity pool, perfect for when you want a refreshing dip whilst watching the world go by.

Daytime entertainment

With dance instructors on board every cruise, why not learn a new skill? Or if you just want to bust a move, look no further than our silent disco evenings. Sit back, relax and enjoy the flight – we’re off on a whistle-stop tour around the world. Using the latest visual technology, you’ll find the sky’s the limit... Our new interactive gameshow, WaveLength, is such a big hit we’ve launched it across the fleet for you to play on every ship.

I’m a firm believer in the idea that you don’t need to spend a lot of money on your cabin to enjoy a cruise. I hate the idea that somebody might be put off of trying a cruise because they feel as though they ‘need’ the money for a balcony. Run by a team of passionate and dedicated professionals, The Reef provides a perfect environment for our younger travellers to create their own holiday memories. For toddlers to teens, we’ve soft play, imaginative spaces and high-energy activities plus gaming, DJ equipment and arts and crafts.

But this article isn’t about me, that was just me highlighting my connection with Iona. This article is about you, and everything you can do onboard Iona. In this article I will cover everything this ship has to offer. Especially not one as huge as the launch of the new P&O flagship Iona. It was made even more special because I’ve been involved with the launch of this ship for nearly 3 years. From my first trip to Norway, to promote the excursions Iona will be doing there, to watching Gary Barlow live at a London launch.

There was no better live music venue than the 710 club (if you can get in). The cosy and very intimate venue has partnered with no other than Gary Barlow as the musical director. But get there early or book in advance, as (rather frustratingly) these were the hottest seats onboard.

For those of you who don’t know, Le Havre is the port that’s usually referred to as the ‘gateway to Paris’ even though it’s usually a 3-hour drive away. Each show was on 3x a night and most shows would be repeated two days in a row. I’m not exactly sure on the capacity of the theatre but it was quite big, that said with 5200 potential guests they need to make sure that everybody has a chance to see every show. P&O did have lots of information in the cabins about how everything worked onboard but I’m definitely one of those people who just tries things and works things out as I go. Iona has 3 ‘main’ restaurants where bookings ahead of time weren’t required.

Plus, with cruises everywhere from the Norwegian Fjords to the sunny Canary Islands, many departing from close by as Southampton, you're guaranteed to visit beautiful destinations and ports of call. Four different Freedom restaurants offer dishes from around the world while the Horizon buffet is the ideal place for an informal meal at almost any time of day. Taste 360 serves up delicious street-food-style bites and some venues have special menus created by our Local Food Heroes with dishes inspired by the destinations you visit. Check out the Keel and Cow for aged steaks and gourmet burgers, catch dinner with a show at The Limelight Club or enjoy small plates with perfectly paired wines at The Glass House.
