The film beautifully translates the emotional intensity of the book onto the screen. James Horner’s piano-and-strings-dominated score sets a tone of tragic foreboding perhaps too strongly at the outset, but generally amplifies the dissonant emotions and fatal inevitability. The major welcome surprise is Eldard, long a familiar face from films and TV but an actor who, until now, has never had a definitive role with which the public could identify him. Although Lester triggers the drama’s nastiest and most unwelcome action when he threatens Behrani, Eldard has by then provided the character with vulnerability, thoughtfulness and innumerable shadings.

Jennifer Connelly
Whether you’re a fan of drama or simply appreciate exceptional storytelling, House of Sand and Fog is a must-watch for any movie enthusiast. Kathy Nicolo (Jennifer Connelly), a recovering alcoholic, has been living alone since her husband walked out eight months ago. She has fallen behind on the taxes for her modest split-level home that has a view, however distant, of the California shore. An inexorably tragic tale about several people stumbling over into the dark side of the American Dream, “House of Sand and Fog” is a faithful, powerful and superbly acted adaptation of Andre Dubus III’s international bestseller. Prospects look possibly more promising on foreign turf, where pic could get a good boost from a berth in a prominent festival early next year.
Editorial Reviews
Under a pseudonym, Lester threatens to have Massoud and his family deported if he refuses to sell the house back to the county. Aware that Lester was acting on Kathy's behalf, Massoud reports this to Internal Affairs, who severely reprimand Lester, and furiously warns Kathy to leave his family alone. Kathy calls her brother Frank for help, but cannot bring herself to admit that she is homeless. Adaptation by Perelman and fellow first-time scribe Shawn Otto effectively telescopes the action of Dubus’ gripping novel, which alternates between the p.o.v.s of the two leading characters before expanding its perspective in the final stretch.

I have not read the novel by Dubus, and no doubt changes have been made in the adaptation -- they always are. But I sense that the essential integrity has been defended. "House of Sand and Fog" relates not a plot with its contrived ups and downs but a story.
The film’s score was composed by James Horner.
This is his last chance to keep up appearances for his wife and son, and to look substantial in the eyes of his daughter's new Iranian husband and in-laws. Massoud, having already spent money on improving the house, is unwilling to accept anything less than the higher value of the property, which the county refuses to pay. Connie advises Kathy that her only option is now to sue the county, though it will take months. Kathy tries to convince Massoud to sell back the house; he too advises her to sue the county and promises to sell her the house back if she comes up with the money, but she retaliates by beginning to harass him and his family in front of potential buyers. Desperate for help, Kathy falls easily into an affair with Lester, who abandons his wife and children and fashions himself as Kathy's protector.
Kathy tries to rectify things through a legal aid attorney (Frances Fisher), but Behrani already has title to the house and in the end she will have to sue the county over the blunder before she can reclaim what’s rightfully hers. In the meantime, she’s completely at loose ends, sleeping in her old car, her property in storage, her life in tatters. Conflict is said to be the basis of popular fiction, and yet here is a film that seizes us with its first scene and never lets go, and we feel sympathy all the way through for everyone in it. To be sure, they sometimes do bad things, but the movie understands them and their flaws.
Lauren's Reviews > House of Sand and Fog
After losing the house in an unfair legal dispute with the county, she is left with nowhere to go. Wanting her house back, she hires a lawyer and befriends a police officer. Neither Kathy nor Behrani have broken the law, so they find themselves involved in a difficult moral dilemma. Yes, Kathy should have opened her mail and paid her taxes. Yes, perhaps, Massoud should agree with Kathy's public defender (Frances Fisher) and sell the house back for what he paid. But we know, from looking into his books (where every Snickers bar is accounted for) that he is almost broke.

It’s a tricky part, one important not to make too off-putting, and Eldard puts it over superbly. Kingsley has always been actor of great precision and discipline, and these traits find a perfect match in the character of Behrani, a man who wears his everyday clothes as if they were a uniform and often speaks as if giving orders. Physically imposing, mentally organized and procedurally correct, Behrani is clearly doomed to forever be a military officer at heart, a precarious fate in his present stage of life. Kingsley commands every scene he’s in as he delivers one of his major screen performances.
